As Swimmers Escaped Attack, Popular Picture Depicts Beach Patrol Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, describes the renowned shoreline as her personal space. On a recent Sunday evening, she, like many neighbors, detected pops echoing around the community.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. She left her home, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the street, speaking to a couple who had rushed up the hill still dripping wet, she heard someone approaching at her rear. The person was a rescuer, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was alone heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to get away from, while holding that sizeable pack and barefoot … He’s running towards something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to move in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally maximum effort sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery During Tragedy

The photograph that Ching snapped of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous moments of courage in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, officers and ambulance crews treating dozens of those hurt.

Community Response and Assistance

Doolan’s story was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the scene of the violence transforming into a impromptu treatment center. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen responding bravely, for instance going into the ocean to rescue people in distress.

Following the attack, comments of appreciation flooded in. An online statement conveyed appreciation for the lifeguards who showed that “compassion will always overcome hatred”.

The group of lifeguards published a communication, saying they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful messages and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the kindness shown towards our responders,” the organization commented. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the hope that it aids those involved.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many permanent lifeguards, remarked that the team rose to the occasion from the second the violence began through to late that evening.

“There have been so many moving stories, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” said a local official.

“The team show selflessness every day in keeping our internationally renowned shores secure for visitors, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and grapple with the terror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much good we have observed in the presence of such darkness.”
