Democratic officials demonstrated outrage after the ex-president alleged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their publication of a controversial video.

The Content That Provoked the Debate

The video footage, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who previously acted in defense or security positions.

"Similar to us, you all swore an vow to protect and support this founding document," the representatives stated in the brief video. "Currently, the dangers to our constitution don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our regulations are clear, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse improper directives, you have to reject illegal orders. No one has to carry out directives that contravene the statutes or our national charter."

Donald Trump's Incensed Reaction

The clip reportedly prompt a heated reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional post, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Representatives React

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a unified declaration condemning the statements.

"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our country with great national pride and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to strongly do the same."

The opposition officials also stated that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must immediately take down these extreme social media posts and retract his dangerous rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the statement added.

Representatives' Strong Response

The officials who appeared in the video also issued a response.

"We are veterans and security experts who care for this country and took an oath to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they declared. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to keep it. No threat, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that important obligation."

"The significant point is that the president views it subject to penalty by execution for us to reiterate the law," they stated. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they fulfill their oath to the constitution and responsibility to obey only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "All citizens must come together and censure the president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for moral clarity."

More Partisan Reactions

The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and published on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."

He continued: "This is an direct THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this right away and without qualification."

The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "It is very harmful, you have prominent officials of Congress instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is historic in the nation's past."

The Conservative representative also allegedly stated to the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to parse the wording and establish all that."

Administration Response

During a White House press conference on that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the spokesperson declared. "We see active officials of the American legislature who worked together to orchestrate a video message to individuals of the US military, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the executive's lawful orders."

She said: "The sanctity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is violated, it can cause people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are fundamentally promoting."
