New research suggests that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these drugs need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
