Israeli citizens commemorate second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace negotiations continue
Citizens have gathered throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The incident saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed formal memorials until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still were held around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the talks indicated that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative stated the morning session finished without significant progress, due to differences over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the differences between the both parties.
Essential Points in Talks
- A permanent truce
- The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies provision
- Post-war governance of the area
Citizen Feeling
In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother lived through the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere seems like home any longer and until every captive return no one will feel safe."
"After we see everyone home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.
Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their backing for the families of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the captives to be released. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that about the majority of Israelis prefer the hostilities to end in exchange for the release of the hostages.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of the music event, grieving people came together to remember the victims.
From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli attacks carried on.
In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the early hours of that day in the west side district, sector and locality districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.
"Once the night falls, the fear comes with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, described.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are sleeping together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who places his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we look at the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."
Health Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had received the remains of several people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the south region of that area indicated another two victims had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south region, health workers reported.
The region's health ministry said a significant number of the {territ
