Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He battled the legal system and the law triumphed.

Two months following being handed a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, former president Jair Bolsonaro finally looks destined for incarceration.

Imminent Jailing

The found-guilty instigator – who's been subject to home confinement in his estate while a number of court processes and appeals play out – is largely predicted to be jailed in the next few days, amidst mounting talk that he will be moved to a well-known maximum security penitentiary.

Past Remarks on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the right-wing former paratrooper exhibited scant compassion for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“Why should we offer those lowlifes a good life?” he previously wondered. “They should just get screwed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to end up behind bars, all you have to do is to avoid rape, kidnap or rob.”

Prison Facility Speculation

But the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week visited the prison in an obvious effort to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, said he anticipated the elderly politician to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe gut problems – the outcome of a almost deadly assault during the last presidential campaign – meant it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is highly critical. He cannot to cope if they send him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the quality of jail cuisine.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells containing forty detainees: “That’s practically one meter squared per inmate.

“We conversed to the inmates and they protest, of course, of the terrible cuisine,” added the senator.

Supporters React

Lucas is not the only voice speaking out prior to the one-time head of state's anticipated imprisonment.

Authoring in a leading publication, one more backer, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and claimed Brazil was about to see “the largest political injustice in its record”.

“It is an wrong that gnaws the hearts of many people in Brazil,” he stated.

Varied Popular Opinion

This could be correct due to the significant support Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. Yet his predicted imprisonment has also warmed the spirits of millions individuals who think he ought to be jailed for plotting to prevent the incoming president from becoming president – and even scheming to have him murdered.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the current administration's Workers’ party, stated: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to obtain dignified handling – but dignified handling while incarcerated. He cannot continue being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years applauding the severe treatment of inmates, had abruptly realized to their entitlements. “Recently has the far-right – which has repeatedly asserted that human rights are not for lawbreakers – opted to visit a penitentiary to discover what circumstances are actually like,” he remarked.

“He is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, insulting conduct”.

Possible Prison Conditions

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently contains about 14,000 prisoners, his expected location seems to be a nearby jail for police officers and other “particular” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

Its cells are considerably more pleasant than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while occupying the spectacular presidential palace, around 20 kilometers away.

According to reports, the cell Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – approximately the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and features a 130 square foot restroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot terrace. “He could be permitted to have a TV and also a cooler in his room as long as they were donated by his relatives,” information stated.

Partisan Responses

Senator Lucas condemned the talked-about proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a form of retaliation” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will decide his fate in the {
