Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack

The experienced striker's signing should represent a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be building momentum.

Their recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
