New York's next mayor confirms his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, did not confirm this decision right away after his triumph in November.
"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will forever remain inside me and my work," he affirmed.
Political Debate
In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
But his rivals, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his previous Astoria apartment.
Featuring cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
