Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Chronicling Three Weeks Behind Bars

The ex-president of France is preparing a book in the coming weeks titled Notes from a Cell, detailing his experience endured in jail.

This news emerged just 11 days after the ex-leader was released as he contests the guilty verdict on charges of unlawful coordination in a case to acquire presidential race money linked to the leadership of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he writes in one passage, suggesting the memoir is more about his reflections during isolation as opposed to wider commentary of the packed and troubled French prison system.

“I forget silence, which is missing in that facility, where noise is endless commotion,” he continues. “The racket is alas constant. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world is fortified in prison.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

At his release request hearing, he participated by video link from his cell, describing his time inside as draining. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend to all the prison staff, showing great humanity, easing this ordeal bearable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“It never crossed my mind at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial forced upon me. I confess it’s hard, deeply straining. It leaves a mark all who experience it due to its intensity.”

First of Its Kind

The former president, who led the nation between 2007 and 2012, was the first former head in the European Union and the first postwar leader of France to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he had said he would use his time to write a book.

Cell Library

Unconfirmed is whether he had time to read and critique the volumes he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books and Alexandre Dumas’s novel The Count of Monte Cristo, a plot where an innocent man is imprisoned then breaks out to take revenge.

Daily Reality

The former leader was placed in isolation for his own security in a room roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet in the Paris jail in the city. Security personnel occupied an adjacent room.

It was stated that he had eaten just yogurt while inside due to concerns prison cuisine could have been tampered with. Although he had access to prepare his own meals but he turned this down, as per accounts. Not known is if he will detail his dietary choices.

Legal Perspective

His attorney, who visited his client daily throughout the jail term, told the release hearing he would be safer out of prison compared to inside. “He received menacing messages, heard shouts after dark and the urgent intervention in an adjacent room when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

Sarkozy went to prison last month when a Paris court sentenced him to five years in prison on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to secure campaign funds during his election campaign.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and another court case is scheduled for next spring.
