Slot Asserts He Is Secure and Retains Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Defeat
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it's natural for doubts to be raised about his position following another heavy loss against PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds endured their 9th defeat in 12 games, representing the club's poorest streak after being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Dutch league title holders on a difficult night at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, things are alright, I've received a lot of support from management,” Slot commented.
“It would be great to change things and earn three points naturally but when you're working as a coach and underperforming then it is normal that doubts arise.”
He noted, “I am OK with my role. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a difficult position but it is about time that we turned it around.”
Conversations with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to provide details on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach said:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive to the team and for me and those talks happen but they don't phone me all the time of the day to say they trust me.”
He added, “During our regular discussions I feel the confidence. But I haven’t spoken to them after this game so far so let’s see.”
Familiar Failings and Player Reaction
The manager expressed regret over familiar weaknesses from his Liverpool side in their European defeat, specifically wasted chances and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his view of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Truthfully, I don’t. I’m saying that to all,” the midfielder stated.
“It is unacceptable. I don't have to wait to reflect. I'm beyond being angry inside. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He continued, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the side I follow. I support them, and I've watched Liverpool for years.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Reds side going through a spell like this with results this poor.”
He stated, “But we still have that badge on our chest. And as long as that badge is taken away, we’re always going to compete.”
“We’re going to try to get this team return to its rightful place, show everyone again what this club is about and why it's known as the top club in the world.”
“But right now, things are bad and it must improve.”
