The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
