The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
